GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program)

Raster Graphics Editor is a computer program that allows users to paint and edit pictures interactively on the computer screen and save them in one of many popular “bitmap” or “raster” formats such as JPEG, PNG, GIF and TIFF.

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a raster graphics editor that is suitable for a variety of image manipulation tasks, including photo retouching, image composition, and image construction. It is free and open-source software under the terms of GNU General Public License (GPL) .

GIMP has several capabilities, such as it can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format  converter and many more.

GIMP is expandable and extensible with the reason that it is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.

Most GNU/Linux distributions include GIMP as a standard application but also available for other operating systems such as Windows OS and Mac OS.
